How Should we Pray

The disciples once enquired of Jesus, and from His teachings, we gather these crucial lessons: Luke 11:1-4

  • Practice sincerity.

  • Avoid hypocrisy.

  • Refrain from praying to gain attention or approval.

  • Direct your prayers to your Heavenly Father, the living Almighty God, who observes in secret.

  • Pray in the name of Jesus Christ because He alone is the Way, The Truth and The Life.

Encouragement to Pray

It's possible that many people, like me, find themselves praying diligently without seeing the desired results. However, I'm pleased to share that prayer is more about surrendering to God and recognizing His supreme power and authority than about receiving specific answers. Picture a young child confiding in a parent about anything and everything – big or small. Every concern is significant to our Heavenly Father, so don't lose hope. The anticipation of instant responses can hinder or dishearten us, but God encourages us to pray continually.

How should I pray?

The prayer that Jesus taught the disciples serves as a guide for understanding the characteristics of a quality prayer.

  • Recognize and honor God's Sovereignty by sincerely offering Praise and adoration to Him.

  • Pray for God's will to prevail over your own.

  • Request God's provision not only for yourself but for others, avoiding greed and selfishness.

  • Seek forgiveness for both known and unknown sins.

  • Extend forgiveness to others for any known or unknown wrongs, even if they haven't sought forgiveness.

  • Pray for strength to resist temptation and to be protected from evil, acknowledging the need for divine help.

  • Acknowledge that all Power, glory, and Sovereignty belong to God alone, not to oneself.

  • Have faith that your prayers align with God's will.

The Discipline of Prayer

Prayer may not come naturally because the flesh and the Spirit often conflict. Just as physical exercise benefits the body, prayer is a powerful exercise for the Spirit with eternal significance for the soul. It's no surprise that resistance arises when you try to pray. I encourage you to persevere and overcome the battle with the flesh. In Matthew 26:41, Jesus advises his disciples: "Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

Philippians 4: 6 - 7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God.”
